SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
BION-M#2

It is planned to install on board BION-M#2 SC improved for new purposes scientific equipment, which is in many ways similar to the equipment of BION-M#1. Taking into account wish of the scientific community the composition of the scientific equipment was changed. At present IBMP RAS is assembling a scientific research program and considering proposals concerning composition of the scientific equipment which will be installed onboard BION-M#2 SC. It is planned to experiment on mice (C57b1), plants, insects, cell cultures and microorganisms. Different dosimeters for studying galactic radiation composition during the flight of BION-M#2 SC have been included into scientific equipment.

Special attention will be paid to research on rodents. It is planned to study in the IBMP facilities before and after the flight central nervous system, webbed skeleton structures, water-salt exchange regulation, cardiovascular system, external breathing system, immune system, regenerative system, animal behavior, cellular and molecular outcomes of combined effects of space radiation and microgravitation. At the same time important research research will carried out in the fields of cellular biology, exobiology, astrobiology and biotechnology.

It is expected that in the course of the BION-M#2 SC mission there will be obtained at least the following:

  • data on modifactory effects of microgravity on radiation susceptibility, therefore on radiation damageability of living beings in the environment of real deep space flight under exposure to increased doses of space radiation of wide spectrum;
  • general data applicable to development of adjusted requirements to the medical support of future space flights;
  • data on biological outcomes of space effects applicable to the general earth medicine.

Besides biological research onboard BION-M#2 SC there will be carried out some technological and physical experiments too. Their outcome will allow to adjust the requirements for the electronic apparatus predesignated to support the high apocenter space flights. Among others the experiments on protein crystallization started on «Bion-M» №1 SC might be proceeded onboard BION-M#2 SC.
